    I don't understand what I'm looking at. It's this a Brazilian brand that is manufactured by tatami?

    Yes, sir. I read it several times before posting and one more after reading your comment. I also googled it before posting to look for more information, but couldn't find anything. It's a new line by tatami, but does not say tatami... Always interested in tatami, but I can't find any more information. It's weird how they don't put their brand name.

    I've seen something similar with guitars. Fender has a secondary brand, Rogue. Rogue seeks the same guitars, but instead of being made in the US our Mexico, they're made in Korea with slightly inferior starting materials and as a result get sold at a cheaper price. This might be the same thing. I don't know that they'd use cheaper material, but maybe these gi's are produced at a slightly more... Cost effective facility and/or country. Regardless, while they may put they're name on a more inexpensive gi, I seriously doubt Tatami would put their name on an cheap, inferior product.

    @Matthew - If you're a fan of Tatami, you'll dig this Gi.
    Campeao has the quality control and design standards of Tatami, but it's manufactured in a new factory with new weaves so they're branding it as its own separate line.

    It's a Tatami Gi. The word is Portuguese for champion. This might be the first of many with Tatami trying to integrate more Brazil culture into the Gi/Kimono scene.

    I am new to BJJ, so excuse my ignorance. Would I get trounced showing up my first day to classes with a blue gi that says champ in Portuguese? What about the black Venom gis? Trying to decide which one to get, this seems like a solid deal, but I don't know the intricacies of the sport yet, and the Brazilians at the gym seem easily offended. Thanks.

    I have heard that black gis can be seen as "badass", abd I would guess a gi with the word "champ" on it would be seen the same way. If you have an easily offended crowd, a rather plain white gi is the best way to go. Can't ruffle feathers if there's nothing on it.

    The only way to know is to ask the folks at your gym. Every one is different and you're right that many Brazilians do take what they consider to be BJJ manners very seriously.

    Some gyms consider it bad manners to wear a black gi at all, others require black or brown belt to do so. I don't think anyone would have a problem with the branding (ie. words) on the gi, as pretty much all gis come that way... but ask an instructor if you're unsure.

    I would avoid having a black gi as your first gi if you're just starting, I would stick with blue or white. IMO, nobody really cares what kind/brand of gi you are wearing either, some people like very plain, some people love lots of patches and embroidery. Nobody will judge you based on your gi if it is a basic blue or white gi.

    Just don't go in a strange off-color gi; stick to blue or white for your first few gi until you figure out what is kosher at your gym. Some gyms are very strict on gi color, but both blue and white are safe colors. Also, some gyms have rules about needing to wear a rashguard or t-shirt underneath, so keep that in mind too.

    Actually, I agree with Marxorz. People do care about such things, rightfully or not. There are traditions in BJJ to be aware of, and it also depends on your academy's culture. Best to learn those from your instructor and fellow students.

    However, I don't think you can go wrong with a Fuji all-around gi in white. It is featured here regularly. Medium weight, durable enough to last at least a couple of years even with regular use. Shrink to fit.

    An alternative is the Tatami Nova Basic Minimo in white. The name says it all. Simple, tasteful, with good construction. Avoid the drama, go to class, learn, enjoy!
